History

The college of Engineering was established in 1989.  It now has three departments and one independent graduate institute, listed here in the order of their establishment. They are Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (1953) with Ph.D. program, Systems Engineering and Naval Architecture (1959) with Ph.D. program, Harbor and River Engineering (1960) with Ph.D. program and the Institute of Materials Engineering(1993) with Ph.D. program.  The departments were established in the 1950s and have significantly contributed to the engineering and marine education in Taiwan. The college employs 74 full-time faculty members in 2008.  In the academic year 2008, we have 1469 students, 1004 undergraduates, and 465 graduate students (369 in Master's and 96 in Ph.D. programs).

Features

The features of this college in the field of mechanic, civic and materials engineering include: structural engineering, water resources and environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, corrosion control, amorphous materials, nanotechnology, welding technique, construction materials, solid mechanics and material science, energy engineering, fluid mechanics, mechatronics and control, design and manufacturing, Nano/Micro system, Bio MEMS, underwater technology, and precision engineering .  The features in the ocean engineering related field include: ship hydrodynamics, cavitation and related problems of marine propulsor, underwater acoustic and vibration of marine vehicles, harbor design and management, coastal disaster prevention. We have a large low background noise cavitation tunnel which is the third largest in the world, and a large hydrolic Lab installed on the campus.

Educational Goals (Objectives  )

The College of Engineering provides students with a rich variety of fundamental engineering disciplines, and advanced engineering knowledge in dealing the with modern day’s complex problems. In addition, the College emphasizes the integration of knowledge and technology in the field of system engineering and naval architecture, harbor and river engineering, mechanical and mechatronie engineering, and materials engineering. To respond to the changing nature of the engineering enterprise, the college has developed three programs. These programs include “Mechatronics and Control Program”, “Naval Architecture and marine engineering Program” and “Nano/micro Technology Program”, which are open to all students at NTOU, and aim to educate students to be more competitive in the ever-changing society. The learning process emphasizes theoretical, practical, interdisciplinary training and leadership.
